BEKOSCH

B9 Entwicklung beruflicher Kompetenzen für den Schausteller durch blockweisen Unterricht (BeKoSch)

(Development of professional skills for showmen by means of modules)

Note: BeKoSch was a 24 months project in the Leonardo programme finished December 2000

The existing educational structures in the European Member States are not designed to meet the demands of the showmenâs profession within the scope of vocational training. At present there is no course that takes into account the complex nature of this professional life. For their profession showmen require knowledge of both crafts and commercial activities, and also application knowledge of legal provisions. In developing suitable training and qualification models the particular situation of showmen must be taken into account. For professional reasons showmen are highly mobile. This mobility characterises their educational situation clearly: for most of the year they do not have any fixed domicile, and in many cases considerable problems have to be overcome in order to guarantee continuous school education and professional training. Therefore, flexible learning methods have to be developed, tested and implemented for the specific training of showmen.

a. Objectives:

* development of a system for acquisition of professional skills with regard to the mobility of showmen with prompt inclusion of the responsible institutions;
* derivation of qualification requirements for the professional activity of showmen;
* development of a curriculum for modules that is recognised by the responsible national institutions;
* testing of a curriculum by using flexible teaching and learning methods;
* improvement of competitiveness of small and medium-sized companies by acquiring professional skills.

Content
In essence a curriculum should be developed that creates opportunities to acquire a certificate containing the following components:
* general and specialised learning subject field;
* practical experience;
* leaving certificate;
plus the relevant materials, such as instructional leaflets, CDs, databases and modules for interactive learning in several languages. By implementing the curriculum it is possible to acquire different social, general and subject-related skills that are required for exercising professional activities. Block lessons should be differentiated into content relating to business management, typical crafts qualifications for the showmenâs profession (fitting and assembling activities, welding, fundamental knowledge of electro-technical issues, woodwork, painting, i.a.) and subjects concerning legal provisions (labour law, trade law, accident prevention, hygiene regulations, i.a.). The showman obtains a certificate relating to the skills acquired. At the conclusion of the project aspects relating to content and organisation can be inferred with the partners and the national institutions for possible recognition of the qualification (by the Ministry of Education and the Arts).

Target groups
The main target group of this project is showmen and their companies. It is designed to provide impulses for developing professional skills for profession-related activities throughout Europe.

Effects
The results of this project will have an effect on:
* the development of specific educational subjects on offer for showmen;
* the teaching of both theoretical and practical skills for showmen and their flexibility on the European labour market;
* the dissemination and application of flexible teaching methods while using modern communication technology;
* the continued existence of the trade, its image in society and the attractiveness of this activity.
