B5 Improving the educational achievements of Traveller children by developing teacher competencies

    1. Summary

    The aim of this 2-year teacher training project is to offer support materials for teachers to improve the quality of teaching that will impact on raising standards for the traveller children. The target groups are teacher trainees and students, teachers, training/ in-service training institutions.
    The project actions will be:

    • To test a teacher training module and then following this test/ evaluation, adapt it and develop it into an effective tool to heighten the awareness of trainee teachers and those currently teaching of the pedagogical implications of a chosen lifestyle on formal learning and to describe methodologies to compensate for and lessen its detrimental effect
    • To establish a dissemination arrangement for the teacher training module within each partner country and to use this adapted training module as a means of influencing national strategies and raising the profile of the client group in national awareness of minority groups.
    • To evaluate a manual of advice for preparing school based distance learning material and to adapt the manual’s text as appropriate.

    The expected outcomes and products will be a tested and adapted teacher training pack, a manual of advice for preparing school based distance learning material, national seminars with teacher trainers, dissemination of outcomes at national level.Target groups: teacher trainees and students, teachers, training/ in-service training institutions.
